India is such a huge country with numerous cities, towns, and villages that finding the proper place or person is often a true challenge for the Indian mail (and for courier services). so as to form the method of delivering letters and parcels more efficiently, the Indian mail introduced the 6 digits Postal index (PIN) Code on 15 August 1972.
The Indian mail has designated 9 specific PIN regions across the country, out of which 8 are countries and therefore the 9th is reserved for the Indian Army

History
The PIN system was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, a further secretary within the Union Ministry of Communications. The system was introduced to simplify the manual sorting and delivery of mail by eliminating confusion over incorrect addresses, similar place names, and different languages employed by the general public.
PIN structure
The first digit of a PIN indicates the zone, the second indicates the sub-zone, and therefore the third, combined with the primary two, indicates the sorting district within that zone. the ultimate three digits are assigned to individual post offices within the sorting district.
