In 1989, Hayao Miyazaki wrote, created, and directed Kiki's Delivery Service, an animated film adapted from the 1985 novel by Eiko Kadono. 

Studio Ghibli animates the show for Tokuma Shoten, Yamato Transport, and the Nippon Television Network. It is distributed by Toei. 

The film is about a young witch named Kiki, who uses her magic powers to earn a living in a new town. 

Aside from depicting independence and reliance in the teenage girls, Miyazaki believes the movie explores the relationship between those two aspects.

Anime Kiki's Delivery Service won the animation Grand Prix at the Animage Anime Festival in 1989.

Studio Ghibli and The Walt Disney Company have partnered to distribute the film for 15 years.

The English dub of the film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures in 1997. It premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 23, 1998. 

Home video releases of the film in the United States and Canada began on September 1, 1998.

In Japan and North America, the movie was released on December 20, 2019, directed by Kenji Nagasaki, produced by Bones, and was met with favorable reviews from critics. 

After the Meta Liberation Army arc that ended the My Hero Academia manga series, the events of the film take place. The film contains elements that Horikoshi had intended to use as a conclusion to the series. 

Before images of a potential third film emerged online, it was planned to be the final edition of the series.  An upcoming sequel will debut in August 2021.

On July 5, 2018, it premiered at Anime Expo and went on limited release in Japan and the United States and Canada in September and October respectively. Critics praised the film, and it was released on August 3 in Japan. 

Filmed between the Final Exams and Forest Training Camp arcs of the manga, the events in the film take place between these time frames. 

During Japan's holiday season of 2019, a sequel, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, was released; the movie will be broadcast on North America's cable channels in February 2020.
